PRESS RELEASE
January 26 2017

Nairobi – Today, Rununu launched the East Africa’s first mobile platform for short videos. In the first of its kind, Rununu is focused exclusively on short video stories about Africans for Africans by Africans.

Rununu launched today with an online event, featuring the posting of new content every hour, including series trailers, interviews with cast, and new articles about story-telling in the African context.

“Up to today, stories here in Africa have been very one-dimensional,” said Ken Oloo, CEO and the creative force behind Rununu. “Kenya’s rich culture deserves a place where a wide range of compelling stories can be told. It’s time we outgrew the typical 30-minute TV episode.” Ken Oloo was awarded as a prestigious Acumen Fellow in 2014 for his work empowering slum youth with storytelling skills and videography. Many of the Rununu staff have trained under Ken’s guidance.

Several dozen editors, writers, cast members, make-up artists, and videographers came together to deliver the first wave of content now available on Rununu.tv. From a 5-star chef doing a cooking challenge in a slum hotel to a drama about unexpected relationships to an unique talk show that unashamedly addresses bold topics to high-quality kids content, Rununu’s videos offers something inspirational, educational, and entertaining for everyone.

“Rununu has the opportunity to transform the media industry. The advertising models of the last 10 years are old and tired,” noted Tony Chen, Rununu Founding Board Chairman. “The market is ripe for innovation in targeting and user experience. More importantly, a whole new generation of storytellers will be able to tell their stories.”

Videos can be viewed on your mobile phone by downloading the Rununu app in the Google Play store or the Apple App store (available 30 January), or by registering a free account at Rununu.tv.
